| History. Ozai was the second born son of Fire Lord Azulon. General Iroh was Ozai’s older brother; it was hinted at that Azulon favored Iroh over Ozai, but whether that was true or not was never proven. He had an arranged marriage with a Fire Nation noble named Ursa. Their union produced two offspring: a son named Zuko and a daughter, Azula. When Azula was born, the future Fire Lord paid the most attention to her and not his son. However, this wasn’t real affection. Ozai saw talent in his daughter and wanted to use that to outdo his brother, Iroh, and Iroh’s son, Lu Ten. Zuko, in Ozai’s mind, was a total failure. As the younger of two royal sons, Ozai didn’t have a chance for the throne unless his father gave him the throne over Iroh. Ozai asked Azulon for this after Lu Ten died in battle. His reason was that Iroh was old and had no heirs, while he was young and had two. Azulon was disgusted with his son’s behavior and, presumably, asked Ozai to kill his own son, Zuko. The truth of this is debatable, as the only way this found out was that Azula had overheard it and told Zuko. Whether this was true or not, things quickly changed in the Fire Nation Royal Family almost over night. Azulon died, Ursa vanished, and Ozai was proclaimed Fire Lord. Ursa, for the protection of her dear son, and Ozai, for his greed for the throne, were the main suspects in the death of Azulon. Whatever happened that night is a mystery but Ursa was banished for what she presumably did. A few years later, the family situation got worse. Prince Zuko got into a war meeting and not long into it, Zuko spoke out against a plan that would use novice troops as cannon fodder. Ozai was angered at Zuko’s impudence and challenged him to an Agni Kai (a duel). At the duel, Zuko refused to fight his father but Ozai was angry with his son. To ‘teach him a lesson’, Ozai burned Zuko’s face badly in front of an audience of Fire Nation nobility. Azula was present as well. Zuko was banished and sent off to find the Avatar. This was a wild goose chase, even if Ozai himself had tried to find this elusive person. Ozai gave Zuko this punishment so that he’d never come back to the Fire Nation. Eventually the Avatar, Aang, came back. When Zuko defected at the Northern Water Tribe after Zhao’s assault on the Moon Spirit, Ozai sent his other child after him. Azula proved to be more successful. She eventually captured the stronghold of Ba Sing Se, imprisoned Iroh, brought Zuko back, and gravely wounded Aang. Though, she only took credit for the fall of Ba Sing Se. Ozai was elated to hear that his son had killed the Avatar (even though he hadn’t) and welcomed him back with open arms. Ozai gave him a place by his side, replacing Azula. During a war meeting at this point in time, there was a problem with a battle plan. The country the Fire Nation was fighting, the Earth Kingdom, was far too large. Ozai asked Zuko what he knew about the people there, for Zuko traveled there during his banishment. Zuko said that they were poor but strong when they had hope. Ozai said that they should crush their hope. Azula, getting bored, gave the idea that they just burn the whole country to ashes. Ozai loved this idea and declared that while Sozin’s Comet was in the sky (the comet is a power boost to all fire powers), the Fire Nation would burn everything in sight in the Earth Kingdom. This is what eventually happened. Then Zuko defected again during an invasion. Zuko found his father and bluntly told him that he had enough. Ozai was amused at first then angry, blaming Iroh for his son’s behavior. Zuko also questioned him about Ursa and what happened to his grandfather. Ozai told him, what we know about that night came from this encounter. Personality. Fire Lord Ozai is a tyrannical ruler. A tradition bad guy known as a ‘mustache twirler’, Ozai loves and craves power. He would do anything to get more power. If he needed to kill his father to get power, he would. Or better yet, have his wife do it and let her get the blame. He rules through fear, as his demonstration of Zuko’s Agni Kai shows. Ozai doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Even his apparent fondness for his daughter, Azula, is only based on her usefulness. Ozai, for example, used her status as a prodigy as something to impress his father, Azulon. However, he keeps a ‘good’ relationship with her. In fact, ‘Fire Lord’ Ozai only kept the position of Fire Lord as it’s the most important title in his country. When victory of the other nations was in sight, he discarded the title readily and chose ‘Phoenix King’ instead. After all, how many Fire Lords were there compared to Phoenix Kings? Ozai strives to be the ultimate tyrant, through whatever means necessary. His temper is another trait of note in Ozai’s life. However, he keeps it mostly in tact but it clearly stands out when he uses outlandish methods to solve simple problems (i.e. when he gave Zuko his scar for just speaking out once). |
